Find ‘Lost’ Insurance & Annuity Contracts of Deceased Family Members or Relatives.

Have you ever wondered if you currently are a beneficiary of a ‘lost’ or misplaced life insurance policy or an annuity contract of a deceased family member? Fortunately the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has created an inquiry portal that notifies insurance companies of your request for information. One request through this portal starts the search process for member companies of the NAIC. The search may take a few weeks but this is a lot less time than waiting for a response from someone who is no longer with us!

This 4:05 minute video gives you a way to clean up family finances… and to prevent further occurrences.

There is a better way! Have a sip of our soup!

Today is mid-march 2025 and today’s
sip of financial soup is how to locate
lost or forgotten insurance and annuity
policies specifically of deceased family
members or relatives we’re going to be
using a resource at the National
Association of insurance Commissioners
naic.org and we’re going to be looking
at showing you how to locate these
policies hi I’m Michael I’m here at the
nest egg Financial Group the sponsor of the
financial soup Channel and many times
when we’re meeting with clients houses
don’t even know what each other is doing
specifically about the financial items
that they may have purchased years ago
or even where the actual policies may be
but most importantly suppose that person
is no longer with us like a uncle family
member father uh if you’re no longer
available you can’t very well ask them
did you have any insurance policies you
know that’s why we prep all our
financial planning clients with asset
Maps which is a financial inventory
system so everybody becomes informed in
advance of where things are and what is
owned
so with that being said let’s jump over
to https
colon
naic.org
and here we are at the homepage of the
NAIC we’re going to go over to
Consumer and we’re going to go over to
under the tools life insurance policy
locator and we’re going to go to the
frequently asked questions what is the
purpose is to help consumers locate
benefits from life insurance policies
and annuity contracts lives of deceased
persons individuals who believe they are
beneficiaries Executives or legal
Representatives May submit a search
request form and it’s coming up here
we’ll show you what it is you’ll need a
social security number first name last
name date of birth date of death veteran
status and
relationship and is there a fee there is
no fee to submit the request there is no
limit of how many requests you can
submit what happens to a request after
it is submitted it will send you an
email and will give participating
companies of
NAIC notification respond to you about
the
policy how long will it take for a
company to contact me depending on the
volume may take several months so this
is something not quick on a on a
database what the niic actually goes
through insurance companies notifies
them hey you have a policy for this
person so as you go over
here so next statement of understanding
an agreement in a process you agree and
you may get a recapture at that point to
verify you are a human but as we said
first name last name suffix address city
state ZIP phone email and again the date
of birth date of death and things of
that nature so this is simply a
launching point of determining if you
have a lost insurance contract because
in reality if you have an insurance
contract and in my practice I have some
insurance contracts that were written in
the 40s and 50s uh and there basically
those insurance companies may have have
been Chang names changed ownerships
across the board and there may be a
record of this uh transitions across
time but more importantly when people
move or people don’t think it’s
important or you have that $5,000 death
benefit policy from 50 years ago a lot
of things get lost there’s no real
database then there’s no
real way of having an insurance company
knowing who lived who died at what time
at what state so forth it’s up to the
consumer or the policy owner to actually
take care of their own financial affairs
so
naic.org
consumer tools life insurance policy
locator and I wish you a good luck
hunting for lost policies thanks
